Thanksgiving 2012

The problem with boycotting my blog for a week is, now I have six-kagillion photos for posts.  I'd say skip 'em, but we ate some really good food that I find it nearly impossible not to share the recipes for.

I'll start with the post that I was working on when Google shafted me.

I was gonna share the "recipe" for the salad that I contributed to our Thanksgiving dinner, but now I'm too lazy.  So you'll just have to look at pictures of it instead.

Here's our Thanksgiving Day in photos:

We got married off this exit:

That's all folks.

Random Thoughts and Tidbits: Part 7

I've been boycotting the internet the last week or so.  I was super irritated over the Google storage issue.  It put me out of the mood for all things internet-related.  So if I haven't responded to your email or stopped by your blog, that's why.

Since I don't have a job, or any sort of income whatsoever, I had to ask The Dad to pay for my blogging habit.  Which annoyed me even more.  That said, as of today, he's officially forking out the monthly payment so that I can continue to blab with pictures attached.  It's a nominal fee in the whole scheme of things, but it's still annoying that I don't even have $3 a month to spend on myself.  Once the holidays are over, the goal is to get the Etsy shop up and running.

On with the randomness:

  • Pink's performance on the AMA's made me want to sprint to the gym.
  • Remember how I said I got my ornaments finished that I make for family members every year?  Um, apparently I forgot that I now have three children.  Whoopsie daisy.
  • Last night after the kids were in bed, The Dad and I were chillin' on the couch watching TV.  The Kid came out of his room and headed past us to the kitchen.  He had been asleep for about 2 hours, but I didn't think much of it 'cause he wakes up with growing pains regularly and gets up to eat a banana or get a drink.  When I heard the cupboard doors under the sink banging, I was like, what is he doing in there?!  The Dad got up to check and walked in to see him zipping up his jammies.  He walked past me again and got into bed.  He had PEED in/on/next to the garbage and all over the kitchen rug.  Houston, we have a sleepwalker.
  • I listen to Coast to Coast every night to fall asleep and last night it was about Black-Eyed Children.  It freaked me the &#@* out and I can't stop thinking about it.
  • A few weeks ago, The Kid asked me what sexy means.  I was at a loss when trying to define it, he got bored with my stuttering and dropped it.  A week or so later, I heard The Girl ask him about it.  He told her that sexy means you can get whatever you want.  Pretty much.  "I'm sexy and I know it."
  • I made stuffing from scratch for dinner last night and it was pretty damn good if I do say so myself.
  • I HATE the Wham Christmas song.  Hate it.  "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart..."  Gag.  Barf.
  • Oprah says you need to put it out there, so this is me putting out that I really want Nate Berkus to come makeover my house.  Starting with the kitchen.
  • I was offered the opportunity to do a review and a giveaway that I declined.  They sent me the packet anyway and now I'm trying to decide whether to contact them about the mistake or just do it.  I'm not a huge fan of reviews, but the giveaway rules, so I'm torn.  The Dad wants me to do it because it involves pie.  A lot of pie.  And I'd be excited to give something good to my regular readers - especially this time of year.  Torn I tell ya.
  • Speaking of giveaways, I won a gift card to Marshall's from Inspired Whims and I was gonna wait to post about it until I had something to show for it, but I just haven't made the time to go.  I need it to be kid-free so I can touch all the stuff.
  • Since I've been anti-internet all week, I've pretty much got the whole house Christmasfied.  Bing Crosby has been on repeat.  The tree is up, but not decorated.  Light strand issues.  I swear, if they had a face, I'd punch them in it.  Christmas lights are evil.  I'm convinced they're all laughing at me.
  • Okay kids, it's time for The Mom to get the kids to bed.  I may be givin' the new photo storage a whirl tomorrow.  Or maybe I'll just continue my boycott and take the rest of the week off.

HELP!

Oh my lord, it's my worst nightmare!  I can't post pictures!!!

I was just trying to upload pictures for a new post and I got this message:

"Whoops! You're out of space. You are currently using 100% of your 1 GB quota for photos. Upgrade storage
Photos are stored in your Picasa Web Albums account and are included in your 1 GB free quota for photos. Additional storage you purchase is shared between several Google products and is in addition to your free quota. Learn more"
Please tell me I don't have to pay a monthly fee to put pictures on my blog.
Anyone else dealt with this?

Happy Thanksgiving

In the spirit of thankfulness, I wanted to pop in and say thank you to all of you who take time out of your day to stop by my blog.  I'm not a big sharer of feelings, but I want you to know how much it still baffles me that strangers would care enough about my life to check in on it daily.  The writing is my outlet and knowing someone is reading what I type fills me up.  So thank you.

We're loading the fam into the car later this morning to make the one-hour trek to my aunt's house for a meal I'm already drooling over.  I do plan on staying true to my norm and will be eating myself sick.  Then I'll lay on the couch for an hour moaning.  Then I'll eat again.  And the people will stare and shake their heads.

Sending you best wishes for a happy, healthy, stress-free, food coma inducing, Thanksgiving.

Now let's dig in.

Random Thoughts and Tidbits: Part 6

  • Baby got some antibiotics last week and is muuuuuch better now.  So is Mommy.
  • Today was the first day of no school all week.  They have no idea how lucky they are to be alive.
  • I may be running to Home Depot for duct tape before the week is over.
  • I went looking for something last night and ended up reorganizing my entire craft room.
  • When I say craft room, what I really mean is my pantry/large appliance storage/serving tray holding/animal feeding station/car seat keeping/recycling center/catch all/laundry room.
  • So what I really did was move some bins/baskets/containers around.
  • Yesterday, I finished my Christmas ornaments that I give as gifts every year.
  • My mom watched the kids Wednesday afternoon so I could leave the house alone.  I went shopping.  And not for groceries.  I exchanged some slippers from my MIL for two pairs of heels, and spent a gift card I received last Christmas on two pairs of jeans, a shirt and a sweater.  It was heaven.
  • The Dad and my brother-in-law watched all five kids last Thursday night so my sister and I could go to the Cheese Bar for dinner and wine tasting.  It was heaven.
  •  My house is filthy.
  • It's picked up and looks clean from afar, but it's filthy.
  • Please send maid service.
  • I'm excited to decorate the house for Christmas.
  • I started a Christmas gift for the kids today that involves the sewing machine.  Will I never learn?
  • I threw out my neck screaming at the kids today.  I wish I was kidding.
  • The Dad and The Kid are playing chess right now.
  • The Girl is putting together a princess puzzle.
  • Baby is complaining because she can't eat the pieces.
  • My neck hurts.
  • TMZ is my guilty pleasure.
  • We did The Kid's parent/teacher conference tonight.  She showed us a story he had written that said his mom is 30 and his dad is 50.  Buwahahahahaaha.
  • She confirmed what we already knew, the boy's a genius.  :o)
  • I think it's time to move to the couch.

Mom's Salami & Swiss Sandwich Loaf

My mom, not The Mom.

I've been eatin' this since I was a kid.  It's delicious.  No wait, it's more than delicious.  It's....I can't think of a better word.

She always made it with a loaf of french bread.  She'd make even slices almost all the way through the whole loaf, but left it so that it was still intact.  Once the goodies were tucked in between all the pieces, she'd wrap it in foil and bake it.  If there was leftover spread, we'd get personal sammies on English muffins.  Mmmmmm.

I needed an app to take to my sister's this weekend for the Duck's game and she requested this.  I had a couple baguettes already, so that's what I used.  I sliced them lengthwise, rather than having to individually make a zillion of them.

Here's the recipe:

Sandwich Loaf

1/2 C butter, melted
1 Tbsp poppy seeds
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3 Tbsp minced onion
3 Tbsp yellow mustard
1 loaf French or sourdough bread (or whatever bread you have in the house)
1/2 lb salami
1/2 lb Swiss cheese

Mix butter, poppy seeds, lemon juice, onion and mustard together to make spread.

Slice bread and brush with butter mix.  Layer with meat and cheese.

If using a whole loaf, wrap in foil.  Bake at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes.

If making open-faced sandwiches, they won't need to bake quite as long.

Here it is coming together at my house:

Spread first.

Then some salami.

Cheese on top.

I baked them up at my sister's and she sliced them into little finger sammies.

I had some of the spread and goodies left when I was assembling, so I pulled out some Grand Central Bakery rye and brewed up lunch.

Did I mention they're delicious?

T Is For Turkey: A Kid Lunch

So I probably should have looked at a picture of an actual turkey before making today's Fun Food Friday lunch.  Ah well, that's why they're "silly" kid lunches.

For the turkey's body, I did a peanut butter and jelly sammie.  His tail feathers are carrots and pears.  Candy eyes, carrot beak and feet, and papaya waddle.  That's what you call it, right?  A waddle?  The T's around the rim are sandwich and pear.  And, of course, candy corn.

Here's The Girl's lunch on her plate (yes, The Kid got ripped off again):

Have a great weekend!
